PRESS RELEASE
Capella Edina Named as The City of Edinburgh’s Symphony Orchestra
The Lord Provost during his speech
On Thursday, 5th September 2024, the Rt Hon Robert Aldridge, Lord Provost for The City of Edinburgh, and Capella Edina hosted an event at the iconic Balmoral Hotel on Princes Street.
During his speech, the Lord Provost reflected on the 900th anniversary of Edinburgh, this year, and announced that on the occasion of this special milestone in the city’s history, Edinburgh would finally also get its own resident symphony orchestra, Capella Edina, after nearly 90 years without one.
The Lord Provost shared his hopes that Capella Edina will contribute to the vast cultural offering of Scotland’s capital. He mentioned that he is extremely proud and supportive of this new arts organisation.
After this, the Director of Music and Chairman of Capella Edina, Luis Schmidt, explained why he founded the orchestra and summarised Capella Edina’s mission.
He said: “Together with King’s Singer Chris Bruerton, and fellow conductor Robert Ames, I have founded Capella Edina under the motto, ‘United by Passion for Music’ and this already exemplifies Capella Edina’s mission of bringing people from all different backgrounds together to enrich their lives through music.
And service plays an integral role here, for me, as I serve as Capella Edina’s Director of Music and Chairman, but more importantly, Cappella Edina serves the community it is grounded in. We serve the people of Edinburgh.”

To conclude the event, Consul General Christiane Hullmann, Consul General for the Federal Republic of Germany, explained more about the special bond between Germany and Scotland, and in particular Edinburgh and Munich.
In 2024 Edinburgh celebrates 70 years of twinning with Munich, which makes Munich Edinburgh’s oldest twinned city.
Both, the Lord Provost and the Consul General asked the guests of the event to support the work Capella Edina does as a charity. Without this support, none of the educational work would be possible.
If you are able to support Capella Edina, we would be grateful, if you could contribute to our work by making a donation to our online fundraising campaign.
Every donation counts and makes a difference.
United by passion for music. Come and join us for one of our concerts.
