If you are not Scottish, you may not be aware of Robert Burns, aside from seeing the notification of ‘Burns’ Night’ appearing on your phone every twenty-fifth of January. And even if you are aware of the Winter celebration, do you really know who you are raising your dram in honour of?
Affectionately referred to as the ‘Waltz King’, Johann Strauss II was an Austrian composer, born in 1825 to a father already highly acclaimed for his Viennese waltzes. Despite his father’s notoriety, the work of the younger Johann would go on to eclipse that of his dad, who originally wanted him to go into a non-musical profession. His father, however, would not live to see his eldest son’s success as his popularity only grew after his father’s death.
Historically, music for films has been provided by orchestras, however in recent years it is becoming increasingly popular to also feature synthesisers and electronics, in what is sometimes referred to as a hybrid orchestra. A prolific user of this technique was Jóhann Jóhannsson, an Icelandic composer, born in 1969.
