Born in 2004 in Germany into a non-musical family, Luis is driven by a commitment to making classical music more accessible to wider audiences. He has already premiered two new commissions by James Clay, alongside performances of lesser-known yet compelling repertoire in thoughtfully curated programmes that have been praised for their imagination and communicative power.
While attending grammar school in Munich, Luis began studying the trumpet before gaining his first conducting experience. After completing school, he continued his studies in the United Kingdom, before moving to Switzerland. At the age of 17, he became a student of the internationally renowned conductor and Haydn scholar Bruno Weil, who has mentored him ever since.
Luis’s artistic profile is shaped by a particular fascination with the music of Anton Bruckner, Richard Wagner, and Edward Elgar. His sound world is often described as dark, powerful, and German in character, yet capable of striking intimacy.
In recent seasons, Luis has worked with the baritone Arthur Bruce, and this season he collaborates with the oboist Ralf Ebner as well as the rapidly rising violinist Andrea Cicalese. Luis’s work has gained the support of opera legend Sir Thomas Allen, who has championed his commitment to community engagement and inclusive orchestral culture.
Alongside his conducting career, Luis is currently a PhD researcher in musicology at the University of Zurich, examining the relationship between Bruckner and Wagner and its implications for the interpretation of Bruckner’s works.
